The state of Florida was one of the first in the country to offer free pre-kindergarten for all of its resident children.

The criteria for qualification for Florida’s free VPK program is very simple: Your child has to reside in the state and be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 of the school year to be eligible.

Plus, if your child’s 4th birthday falls between Feb. 2 and Sept 1 in the calendar year, you can postpone enrolling your child in VPK if you want and wait until the following school year, when your child is 5 years old.

Lake Nona Pre School — Why It’s Valuable

Every child in Florida is eligible for VPK benefits, regardless of their background or income level. The purpose of the program is to prepare each child for kindergarten and build the foundation for their future educational success.

VPK gives every child the opportunity to excel in school and in their adult lives. It features higher literacy standards, accountability, substantial instruction periods, manageable class sizes, and highly qualified instructors who are trained to give your child the best chances of succeeding in school.

The state wants to ensure that all kids are intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically ready to enter school and that they are excited about learning.
