If you have children, it’s probably already a late summer family tradition to go back to school shopping.

Every year, it seems as if stores are stocking their shelves with back to school items earlier and earlier. So what things do you actually need to buy for your children?

The easiest way to make sure you get exactly what your children will need for the school year is to ask their teacher. He or she can provide a list of the items that you need, as well as any specific recommendations on brands, sizes, quantities and other important details.

In many states, you can save a little money while shopping for back to school supplies by going shopping on “tax-free days”. These are days in which the taxes that normally apply to certain items — such as clothing, office supplies, and other items your child is likely to need — are temporarily suspended in order to give parents a break.

It’s important that you get exactly what your child needs for going back to school. A written list from your child’s instructor or school is generally the best approach.

Visit your child’s school’s website, or contact the school directly by phone to see if there is a list available. If you have the child’s teacher’s contact information, you can try contacting them directly to get the list.

Don’t be shy about calling teachers during the summer break. Most instructors welcome input from their student’s parents, especially when it comes to school supplies so that children have the right items and are ready to begin learning starting from the very first day.

Be cautious of general lists of back to school items all kids will need that you see online or in the newspaper because you may end up spending money on items your child doesn’t need or can’t use.
