5 Halloween Costume Ideas For Children

Regardless of your choice, remember that crafting these costumes should be fun!

Feel free to get creative with colors and materials and, most importantly, involve your little ones in the process for a memorable Halloween craft activity.

Classical Halloween Creatures

Ghost Costume

Materials:

  • White bedsheet or large piece of white fabric
  • Scissors
  • Black fabric marker or fabric paint
  • White face paint
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Makeup brushes/sponges

Instructions:

  1. Take the white bedsheet and drape it over your child’s head to measure the appropriate length.
  2. Cut out two holes for the eyes using scissors. Make sure they align with your child’s eyes when the sheet is draped over them.
  3. Use the black marker or fabric paint to create a spooky mouth or any additional ghostly features. If desired, add additional spooky touches like ragged edges at the bottom of the sheet by cutting with scissors.
  4. Trim the bottom of the bed sheet if necessary, so it doesn’t drag on the ground.
  • Apply white face paint all over the face, avoiding the eye area where the makeup will be applied.
  • Using a brush, apply black eyeshadow around the eyes, blending outward to create a hollowed-out effect.
  • Intensify the depth by adding layers of darker eyeshadow closer to the eye and lighter as you move away.
  • Blend the edges well to avoid harsh lines, creating a gradient that gives the illusion of sunken eyes.

Witch Costume

Materials:

  • Long black dress or skirt and top
  • Black construction paper (for hat)
  • Broomstick
  • Green face paint (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Dress your child in a long black dress or a black skirt and top combo.
  2. To make the witch’s hat, roll the black construction paper into a cone and tape it to secure. Cut a larger circle with a radius equal to the base of the cone and a hole in the middle for the head. Attach the cone to the brim.
  3. Accessorize with a broomstick as the witch’s flying vehicle.
  4. Add some green face paint to give your little witch a classic look.

Extra: Lego Block Costume

This is one of the simplest and yet creative costumes there are! The required materials are easy to find and putting it all together doesn’t make too much of a mess at home.

Materials:

  • Large cardboard box that fits over your child’s torso
  • Six plastic cups or round containers
  • Solid color spray paint (Lego block color)
  • Strong glue or duct tape
  • Sharp knife or box cutter
  • Black pants and long-sleeve shirt (matching the box color)
  • Sandpaper or nail file to smooth cardboard edges

Instructions:

  1. Cut off the bottom flaps of the cardboard box so your child can step into it easily.
  2. Cut holes for the arms and head with the sharp knife or box cutter. Make sure to smooth any rough edges for safety using the sandpaper or nail file.
  3. Glue the plastic cups or containers upside down in two rows of three on the front of the box to resemble Lego studs.
  4. Once the glue is dry, spray paint the entire box and cups in a bright, uniform Lego color. Allow it to dry completely.
  5. Dress your child in the pants and long-sleeve shirt that are the same color as the block before stepping into the Lego block costume.
